oh, inverted world.

for those that know me, you may have already heard this exposition. in fact, if you've ever talked to me you have probably experienced it as well. for example, if you have had "A" conversation with me in the last month, you have most likely been subject to an honorary tribute to the white stripes. and yes, i know they were the subject on a posting awhile ago as well. or maybe you heard me talk about lazy sunday, or the new beck album, or how solid each weezer album continues to be, or how i hate walmart, or whatever. but let me discuss this inverted world.

one thing that people will never surrender is their taste. and this has nothing to do with CN VII. so, people love their music. people love to share their music. and we all do it. we constantly recommend this or that. i am guily in a bad way, in fact, nothing makes me happier than when someone tells me how much they have been listening to death cab lately (3 people this week alone) and they can't get enough or whatever. there is as much joy in the recommendation as there is in its receipt. taste sets us apart, as it breeds individuality. without individual preferences we would be a stale society steeped in stagnance. musical taste is no different. nor are movies, tv shows, books, museums nor even boy/girl friends. in fact, i think that this may be one of the reasons it can be so difficult for single people to be completely satisfied in a relationship. there exists an element within us that wants our partner to be the living realization of our tastes. when considering this living emulation, whether is be as shallow as the jokes they tell or deeper as in the way they perceive people, you want that person to epitomize all that you deem as "good taste." otherwise, what do you have to set you apart if not your taste?

and for me, that means the white stripes, AD, BMX bikes, hating walmart, the daily show and mac elitists. and i will forever try to sell you on my music, even if you don't like it at first. and yet therein lies the great irony. i seek to force my tastes on everyone, while concomitantly claiming that our tastes delimit our individuality. mutually exclusive? maybe, maybe not.

in the present tense, be sure to check out "oh, inverted world," my latest shins album discovery and my latest profile picture. and i will continue to post album covers on my profile of whom i am currently tuned in to.

Peter,
All good points. Why do we do that??

Stephen-
Nickel Creek? That one surprised me coming from you. I don't know you but when I read your tastes I thought, "nickel creek?" No complaints. I really like them. I say 'amen' to The Office (british style).

My favorite of 2005 was Ray LaMontagne Trouble album. Check him out if you are looking for some new stuff. I couldn't turn him off. Passionate lyrics. Also Mason Jennings became a new favorite last year. Going to see him in SF in Feb.

Hey. I don't know you, but I like your blog. Nice.

But, um, "Oh, Inverted World" is The Shins' first album. "Chutes too Narrow" is the latest.

Interesting that you would write about this peter. I admit I was one of those 3 who told you how much I like Death Cab. I do not see it as you imposing your tastes on me. If I hated Death Cab, I wouldn't be listening to it nonstop. I would appreciate the exposure and then go on my merry way listening to whatever I like to listen to. Surely we all want those closest to us to enjoy our tastes because it creates a connection, gives us something to talk about and share on a lazy afternoon when talking and explaining life questions is, well, out of the question. It's not imposition unless you insist on their acceptance and adoption of your tastes.

my tastes: fiona apple, dave matthews, coldplay, death cab, postal service, andrew bird, frank sinatra, dean martin, sammy davis, beethoven, chopin, miles davis, john coltrane, the killers, the strokes, david gray, citizen cope, beastie boys, harry connick, vivaldi...

but in the end... we are still individuals. that's what makes us interesting and worth being around.

Stephen: Toire wa doko desu ka?

Peter: Very interesting post.

At first glance there are a lot of reasons why similar tastes make a relationship better. It makes life easier. You prefer similar types of dates, there is not a constant changing of the radio station or playlist in the car or house, you get to spend more time taking part in things you enjoy (rather than pretending you enjoy what you're doing together), buying a car is easier, grocery shopping goes smoothly, meals are delicious and the list goes on and on.

I was disucssing with Amy the other day a similar idea. The theory starts with a presupposition:

People date and marry those who look like themselves.

If you've never noticed this, then look around and see if this holds true.

The theory is in the explanation: people are inherently narcissistic.

This theory could also be applied to seeking out someone with similar tastes. Maybe seeking out a partner that looks, thinks, listens and acts like ourself stems from our inherent sense of self-importance...

i have a theory for that too. by that i mean people looking like each other. its kinda a rendition of LaMarke's theory of use/disuse. people who spend a lot of time together tend to mimic each others mannerisms. because they are always making similar facial expressions, they are using and not using the same facial muscles, thus developing flabbiness and taughness in the same regions of the face, ie: they look like each other.

Everyone should also know that death cab has failed to keep my full attention for a single song (soul meets body is the one exception)

i have always respected your intelligence. don't let me down. you gotta ask yourself, why am i listening to death cab? cause if its for really talented music writing, you may be disappointed. however, if you listen to some of their old stuff you will feel their innovation (although sometimes a difficult retrospective task). however, one key thing that sets them apart is ben gibbards lyrical skills. he is one the most ingenious lyricists i have EVER heard. and if this is your motive, start with transatlanticism and listen to songs like, the new year, tiny vessels, or a lack of color. you opinion will drastically change and your love affair with death cab will begin.

nick_
what would i do without a older brother who hooks me up like that? to your credit, you also gave me coldplay, jimmy eat world, the cure, the strokes and even old schoolers like rush and pearl jam.

I have to make a comment about couples who look alike marrying. I guess Shauna and I are not self-centered by Paul's reasoning, because we do not look alike. In fact our mannerisms are not alike, even after 31 years of marriage. Do Steven and Jill look alike? Noooo. Do they have the same mannerisms? Noooooo. But once during our first year of marriage and young single member of our ward in Chicago, did tell Shauna and me that we looked alike. We laugh about it today. It must be our skinny necks. Dad

ron: i disagree. i have always thought you and shauna look alike. you are by far the darkest of all the frandsen siblings. you are darker and look the most asian. shauna is asian. therefore, you look somewhat similar (because all asians look alike, right?)

aimee: if you are suprised by my love of nickel creek then i think you misunderstand them as a band. i think petey does, too. if any of you like radiohead then you would love nickel creek--you just have to give them a chance. when i was at the nickel creek concert they gave shout outs to radiohead as their chief influence and then covered their songs. nickel creek is a smart, talented, virtuosic version of bands like death cab, radiohead, and most of the indie rock scene.
